I started a book with a friend of mine titled Pursue the Intentional Life by Jean Flemming. We started it to encourage each other to complete a number of books in the year, share our thoughts and grow spiritually. From the name, it’s a book that drives you to be conscious about the decisions you make when living your life and one of those conscious decisions is knowing that God is watching and in fact all of God’s creation (Romans 8:19). But today we are focusing on God’s watchful eye over us.

“His eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me”

Sometimes we completely ignore the idea that God can see us when we are hidden under the roofs of our homes or in a dark place especially if we are hiding to do something wrong.

Well God sees and knows everything (Psalm 33:13-15)

Imagine you are a parent watching your two-year-old child as he plays across the living room. You’re watching intently to make sure he does not hurt himself and you are also watching in case he does something great- like takes his first step.

God’s watchful eye over us is not to condemn us or have that “I caught you” moment. He wants to protect us as much as he wants to celebrate us (Zephaniah 3:17). He is watching us because he loves us.

I’ve been reading Billy Humphreys book ‘To know him’ that teaches how God makes himself known to us through different principles of his creation (superwoman reading two books at the same time). There was a reference made to the book of Songs of Solomon to show how much God loves us irrespective of how we think we are:

“I am dark yet lovely…” (1:5)

“If you yourself do not know, Most beautiful among women, Go forth on the trail of the flock And pasture your young goats By the tents of the shepherds. To me, my darling, you are like My mare among the chariots of Pharaoh.…” (1:8-9)

God already knows that we are prone to make mistakes, but his watchful eye is one to guide and to guard. He watches us to see where we go so that he can lead us to where we should go.

His eye is on us to protect us so that nothing can take us away from Him (Psalm 121:4).

His eye is on us so that we know that he is not far away when we are seeking him and that we have his full undivided attention. I love Psalm 139 which buttresses this point as it explains how close the presence of God is to us.

His eye is on us because we are his.
